Dave Mejias
David L. Mejias is an attorney in Nassau County, New York. He is the managing partner of the law firm he established when he was 26 years old: Mejias, Milgrim & Alvarado, a firm which practices primarily in the areas of family law and personal injury. He has also served on the Nassau County Legislature.
Personal Background
Mejias' father, Jose, immigrated to the United States after fleeing from Cuba for political reasons. David was born in Farmington, NY, where he played on the high school football team. Jose was killed in an automobile accident caused by another person's negligence when Dave was 13 years old. The emotional and financial turmoil that followed this loss are part of the reasons Mejias chose his career and political path: to be an advocate for people in need.
Political Career
In 2003, Dave Mejias was elected to the Nassau County Legislature, where he served until 2009. He was the first Latino to serve on that body.
He also ran unsuccessfully to represent New York's 3rd District in the House of Representatives in 2006. In, 2010, he was making a bid for the New York Senate when he was arrested on charges of menacing, stalking and recklessly endangering an ex-girlfriend. Although he was cleared of all charges, he dropped out of the campaign.
Education and Honors
Dave Mejias received his bachelor's degree from the University at Albany's School of Business, and his Juris Doctor from Fordham University School of Law. He has been named to the Long Island Business News 40 Under 40 list of rising stars and future leaders and to the Long Island Press Power List of the most influential Long Islanders.
